Malnutrition

Deficiency, surplus or imbalance in a person's intake of energy and nutrients is called Malnutrition. The word Malnutrition covers two wide range of conditions. The first one is undernutrition - which refers to the state in which the body does not get enough food which leads to delayed growth and underweight. The second condition is overnutrition; it relates to physical conditions such as obesity and diet-related no infectious diseases including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer).

Causes Inappropriate dietary choices, a low income, difficulty in obtaining food, and various physical and mental health conditions are the causes of Malnutrition.

Malnutrition -Dental Connect

Malnutrition and poor oral health have a strong connection between them. Tooth loss affects a person's ability to chew or swallow food, which in turn affects nutrition intake. (e.g., consuming fewer meals or meals with lower nutritional value) leading to poor nutritional status and increased risk of Malnutrition.

Aged people are at an increased risk of Malnutrition because of their impaired dentition. Lots of studies have linked poor oral hygiene is one of the major contributing factors for Malnutrition.

  • Visit the Dentist six months once to avoid plaque formation in your teeth.
  • You can prevent the development of plaque by brushing your teeth twice in a day.
  • Usually, food particles may settle in between your teeth and under the gums after finishing your meal. That can be reduced by regular flossing of the mouth after every meal.
  • Use mouthwash in addition to brushing and flossing.
