Diabetes

An image with a heart-shaped balloon and stethoscope along with a doctor pad naming Diabetes.

Introduction

The human body gets its energy from blood glucose which was produced from the food we eat. Insulin is the hormone which regularises this process, and if the body is not able to produce the required level of insulin, then blood glucose level increases, which leads to diabetes. For people with a diabetic condition, Glucose made from the food remains in the blood, and it will not reach various parts of body cells which require energy.
Even though diabetes can not be cured permanently, there are a lot of health benefits if you could manage it at a prescribed level by following healthy lifestyle habits. It starts with maintaining good oral health and by consuming a nutritiously balanced diet.

CAUSES

The most common prevailing form of diabetes is "type 2 diabetes"  which is mostly inherited. Other causes

  • Sedentary lifestyle.
  • Poor diet
  • Obesity
  • Ageing.

Diabetes- Dental Connect

The connection between diabetes and tooth is mutual. A study done on diabetes-free adults in the US  proved that Periodontal infection is generally connected with insulin resistance, which is a significant cause of type 2 diabetes.
Another international study found that people with severe gum disease had a significantly higher prevalence of abdominal obesity, serum fatty acids and insulin resistance.

Severe gum disease can lead to a rise in high blood glucose levels as the body tries to fight the infection, and this process becomes a vicious cycle of uncontrollable diabetes and multiple tooth loss.
Apart from these, people with loose tooth will avoid healthy but hard to chew food items like nuts. Instead, they tend to overeat soft unhealthy food or live on drinks. It eventually leads to obesity and eventually, diabetes.

 Lifestyle Challenges

Living with diabetes can be emotionally stressful and challenging as you will have to give up a lot of things which you love.

  • People with diabetes feel tired or energyless, which would affect their ability to honour their professional commitments.
  • You will have to spend a considerable amount of money on treating and keeping diabetes under control.
  • You could not be eating your favourite food items at a family function or social gathering, as it might increase your blood glucose levels.
  • Sleep quality gets affected due to frequent urination in night.
  • You will get a feeling of social discrimination.
  • Injecting insulin can become a cumbersome process in the advanced stages of diabetes.

Lifestyle Changes Required

  • Follow a balanced healthy diet. Eat non-fat dairy products and lean meats, and more quantity of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains regularly.
  • It is time for you to start physical activity now. Keep your body healthy and fit, Exercise regularly at home, no need to join the gym.
  • Control your alcohol intake progressively. If you don't drink too much beer, wine, and liquor, then it may be easier to control your blood sugar. So if you cannot avoid drinks at least don't overdo it.
  • Try to stop smoking gradually.

Oral health tips

  • Use Mouthwash every day as it can reach all the places of the mouth where the toothbrush cannot go. It helps the mouth to get rid off debris that irritates the gum line and causes gingivitis.
  • Brush Enough - at least for two minutes, twice daily.
  • Use Proper Brushing Technique because a quick wash of your bristles is not enough to dismiss the leftover food particles and polish your teeth.
  • Pick the right kind of brush which can enter the whole area of your mouth, and clean the hidden food debris there.
  • Floss Properly. Floss should massage against the teeth in an action that creates a forward or backward 'C' shape, wrapping floss around each tooth.
  • Change Your Brush regularly.

Dental symptoms when you should contact the doctor

  • Toothache  Constant pain is a sign that you should see a dentist.
  • The dry mouth When your mouth stops producing enough saliva, you are susceptible to infection and tooth decay.
  • The bad breath Gum disease often associated with bad breath.
  • Irritated Gums and loose permanent teeth.

If you have already lost a tooth or two, Don't wait. Getting your fully functional teeth is just a step away. Check out your options here.
