A man estimating his blood pressure level.

Hypertension

A human body condition in which the force of blood on the walls of the artery is consistently very high is called Hypertension. Usually, hypertension is estimated as a blood pressure level above 140/90 and acknowledged as severe if the pressure level is above 180/120.

Known causes

  • Being overweight or obese can enhance your risk for high BP.
  • Genetics, Physical changes, Environmental changes and unhealthy lifestyle options like lack of physical exercise and unhealthy diet habits can lead to overweight and obesity problems.

Hypertension -Dental Connect

Hypertension and dental diseases are interconnected by inflammation which is an essential immune response of the body to an infection. Though inflammation is necessary over a while, it starts to affect the blood vessels, which results in increased blood pressure.

Apart from that, Various research studies have shown that people with an identified gum disease (periodontitis) are showing lesser response to their blood pressure medication than people with healthy gums.   Another hypertension-related study has indicated that Patients with oral infections (periodontal gum disease) had elevated blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) levels.

People with gum disease were 20% less likely to achieve a "healthy" blood pressure range. These findings strengthen the hypothesis that periodontal infections may contribute to hypertension and other heart conditions (CVD).

Oral Health tips to avoid Hypertension

  • Need to brush your teeth twice a day, in the correct way. Holding your brush at a 45-degree angle is the best way to brush.
  • To avoid plaque formation around your teeth, always brush between your teeth using a soft, rounded-tip bristled toothbrush which can reach all parts of your mouth.
  • Don't forget to clean your tongue while you brush.
  • Do floss between the teeth at least once a day.
  • Always spend at least 3  minutes brushing and cleaning your whole mouth.
