Heart disease and oral health

The blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the heart are called coronary arteries. Coronary heart disease (CHD), or coronary artery disease, develops when the coronary arteries become too narrow.  Blood vessels become narrow when there is a plaque buildup on them due to various medical conditions.

Causes

High LDL cholesterol, Hypertension family history, diabetes, smoking.

As seen above even Heart disease and oral health are always interlinked

Dental Connect-Coronary Heart Disease

The bacteria which causes gum disease (periodontitis) connects the CHR with oral health. A severe bacterial infection on the gums causes periodontitis. This Bacteria starts to spread in the bloodstream and other parts of the body if it is left untreated for an extended period.

When these pathogens reach the heart, cause inflammation by attaching themselves to the heart cells and damaging them.

Various research by the American Heart Association also relates other cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) to the inflammation caused by oral bacteria.
